Biography:
dr. Cécil Meulenberg received his bachelor's and master's degrees in medical biology from the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Utrecht in the Netherlands. In 2001, he received his doctorate in the field of neurotoxicology at the Veterinary Faculty of the University of Utrecht, Netherlands. As a medical biologist, he specialized in the field of cellular electrophysiology.
After completing his doctorate, he participated in numerous international scientific projects in the fields of neuroscience, toxicology, audiology and oncology, namely at the University of Utrecht and Groningen (Netherlands), the University of Oslo (Norway), and the University of Sussex (Great Britain).
In 2008, he moved to Slovenia. In recent years, at the University of Primorska, he has developed and implemented a master's course that connects knowledge about the brain with nutrition, behavior and the occurrence of various diseases (Nutrition and the Brain).
Since 2017, he has been working as a researcher at The Institute for Kinesiology Research (IKARUS) ZRS. In cooperation with local and international partners, he develops research projects in the field of kinesiology and aging, with an emphasis on alternative therapies and healthy nutrition, which would have a positive impact on people's health in all stages of life.
Living in the Mediterranean inspired him to develop interdisciplinary projects with a focus on sustainable food systems that focus on marine aquaculture, their impact on the environment and the ecosystem services they provide, and the promotion of various aspects of the Mediterranean lifestyle: nutrition, physical activity, environmental awareness and ecosystem value.
For ZRS Koper he is involved in various project at the Institute for Kinesiology Research (TwinBrain, Fatigue FWO-ARRS project) and the Mediterranean institute for Environmental Studies (since July 2022 coordinating Smart Control of the Climate Resilience in European Coastal Cities – SCORE for ZRS MIOS).
For this interinstitutional position he is involved in local projects (DOBRO ZA MORJE – DOBRO ZAME; Okusi morje 2 – Izobraževanje o klapavicah) and develops projects that include approaches as described above.
He published the results as a first and co-author in various peer-reviewed scientific journals.
